Many of you may be new to Pilates so over the next few weeks I want to share with you an introduction to the practice. To help guide our learning I’ve created a 30 day calendar that highlights a new Pilates move each day! More information on the exercises outlined in this calendar, including “how-to” videos, can be found on my Instagram page, so be sure you’re following @shellywebbfitness. I’d love to see your progress, feel free to tag me in any posts you make while following along with this calendar!

Who was Mr. Pilates? Joseph (Joe) Hubertus Pilates is the creator of the exercise method named after him. Joe outlined his method in his original publication “Return to Life.” His book documents his classical regimen of mat exercises that make up Contrology (his original name for Pilates) for improving overall health. In Joe’s words, Pilates “develops the body uniformly, corrects wrong postures, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind, and elevates the spirit.”
What is Pilates today? I would describe Pilates as an exercise regimen that targets the entire body, with special attention to strengthening the core–not just the abdominal muscles but also the back, glutes, and postural muscles. Pilates works to lengthen the spine and tone the body for improved strength, mobility, and flexibility.
I’ve always been inspired by what Joe overcame in his lifetime. For more information on the rich life and history of Joe Pilates, the Pilates Method Alliance has put together a History of Pilates that is well worth the read.
